As the weather changes and more people spend time outside, it is important for residents to be cognizant of overhead electrical wires. Most people think they are unsightly but don’t think much more about them. The lines are very high voltage and even a small would be deadly.
Spring brings kite flying for families and now drones are overhead as well. Anything that flies overhead could potentially hit a live power line. Be aware of your surroundings and if you see an issue with a line or are concerned that something came in contact with one and caused damage, call your local electric company immediately.
See below a list of reasons why electrical lines are a concern:
- Safety Hazards: Overhead electrical lines pose a significant risk of electrocution if someone comes into direct contact with them. This could be especially dangerous during storms, when branches or other debris may fall onto the lines.
- Power Outages: Overhead lines are more vulnerable to damage from weather events, such as high winds, lightning, or ice storms. When these lines are damaged, it can lead to widespread power outages that affect residents for extended periods.
- Fire Risk: Overhead electrical lines can spark fires, especially in dry conditions or during extreme weather events. If a line breaks or is exposed, it could ignite nearby vegetation or structures, potentially causing a wildfire or a home fire.
- Aesthetic Impact: Many residents find overhead lines unsightly, particularly when they clutter the view with a web of power poles and communication wires. This can detract from the appearance of a neighborhood or natural landscape.
- Property Damage: In severe cases, falling lines can cause damage to homes, vehicles, or other structures. A downed line could cause physical harm to property and require costly repairs.
- Interference with Tree Growth: Overhead lines often require the trimming of nearby trees to maintain a safe distance. This can affect the health and growth of trees and impact the local environment.
- Maintenance and Accessibility: Maintaining and repairing overhead electrical lines can be challenging. For residents, this means possible disruptions during repair work, as well as safety risks for those working on or near the lines.
If there is a storm, high winds, a car accident or anything else that causes a wire to call, call your police department immediately. Never go near the wire to check it out yourself. A trained professional must assess whether the wire is live or not. Maintain a safe distance and call 911.
